All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged as the dominant force in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, securing victory in five out of the six councils.

Gatekeepers News reports that results released by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday showed that the ruling party won in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Kuje, Kwali, and Abaji. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recorded its only win in Gwagwalada, breaking the APC’s sweep of the territory.

In Gwagwalada, PDP candidate Mohammed Kasim defeated APC’s Yahaya Shehu after polling 22,165 votes against 17,788, according to figures announced by the INEC returning officer. The outcome marked a significant comeback for the opposition party in the area.

The elections, conducted across 68 constituencies, were held to choose six area council chairmen and 62 councillors. Security was tightened during the exercise, with a temporary restriction of movement and the deployment of thousands of security personnel to ensure peaceful voting.

Observers reported generally calm voting in most parts of the FCT, although there were isolated complaints of late arrival of materials and allegations of vote-buying and voter intimidation in some locations.
