Bayelsa State House of Assembly has approved the appointment of Pastor Peter Pereotubo Akpe as the new Deputy Governor of the state, bringing an end to weeks of political consultations and speculation.
Gatekeepers News reports that the confirmation was carried out during a plenary session on Tuesday following his nomination by Governor Douye Diri.
Akpe, who until his nomination served as Chief of Staff at the Government House in Yenagoa, was selected to fill the vacancy created by the death of the former Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on December 11, 2025.
His emergence aligns with the political zoning arrangement in the state, as he hails from Sagbama Local Government Area, the same axis as his late predecessor.
Before his new role, Akpe built a long career in public service and politics, working for over two decades in the Rivers and Bayelsa civil services before retiring as an Assistant Director.
He also served two terms as a member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly between 2011 and 2019, where he rose to the position of Majority Leader. In addition, he held key political appointments, including Commissioner and Deputy Chief of Staff, before becoming Chief of Staff in 2024.
Akpe holds a doctorate in Administration and Planning and is a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
