JUST IN: Egbetokun Resigns As IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has resigned from his position.

Gatekeepers News reports that according to sources, his resignation followed a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

Egbetokun’s tenure as the 22nd IGP began in June 2023 after his appointment and confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council. His period in office was marked by debates over the retirement age for police officers and the extension of his tenure, which was amended to a four-year term under the Police Service Act. Despite facing protests and complaints from various quarters regarding the extension, Egbetokun was scheduled to serve until 2027.

Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Olatunji Disu is set to succeed Egbetokun as the new IGP. Disu, born on April 13, 1966, previously served as Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State, and headed Intelligence Response Team (IRT), a position once held by the late Abba Kyari.

He also led the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) annex in Lagos and holds advanced degrees in Administration and Criminology, Security, and Legal Psychology.
