Reduced DisCo Power Supply Is Due To Gas Shortages— NISO

National Grid National Grid

Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has attributed the recent reduction in electricity supply across the country to inadequate gas supply to thermal power plants, leading to lower power generation and reduced allocation to distribution companies (DisCos).

Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement issued on Thursday, NISO said average power generation on the national grid currently stands at about 4,300 megawatts (MW), far below the level required to meet nationwide demand.

The operator explained that thermal plants, which account for the bulk of Nigeria’s electricity generation, require about 1,629.75 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) of gas daily to function optimally. However, as of February 23, only about 692 MMSCF per day was available — representing less than 43 percent of the required volume.

NISO noted that the shortfall in gas supply has significantly constrained electricity output, forcing it to reduce energy allocation to DisCos. It added that the situation has necessitated load shedding across the grid to maintain system stability and prevent widespread outages.

The operator explained that whenever generation drops sharply, it is compelled to ration available electricity in line with the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) framework approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), ensuring equitable distribution among DisCos.

While apologising for the inconvenience caused to consumers, NISO said it is working closely with relevant stakeholders in the gas and power sectors to improve gas supply and restore full electricity generation and distribution nationwide.
