Operatives of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested Sheleru Sadiq, a former councillor in the Orimedu area of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, over alleged possession of a large quantity of cannabis.
Gatekeepers News reports that the anti-narcotics agency said Sadiq was apprehended on March 2 at his residence following intelligence linking him to the storage and distribution of illegal drugs.
According to Femi Babafemi, spokesperson of the NDLEA, officers who searched the premises reportedly recovered about 40 kilograms of cannabis, commonly referred to as skunk.
Babafemi said the arrest was part of ongoing nationwide operations by the agency aimed at dismantling drug trafficking networks and reducing the circulation of illicit substances across the country. He noted that the NDLEA continues to intensify intelligence-driven raids and enforcement activities as part of its broader campaign against narcotics.
The agency also disclosed that the suspect’s arrest formed part of a series of recent operations in different states that led to the interception of illegal drugs and the apprehension of several suspects linked to trafficking activities.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing and the suspect is expected to face prosecution in accordance with Nigeria’s drug control laws once the investigation is concluded.
