China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, says the decision to grant zero-tariff treatment on imports from 53 African countries with diplomatic relations with China will significantly expand trade and create wider opportunities for African exporters in the Chinese market.

Gatekeepers News reports that the policy is expected to take effect from May 1, 2026, as part of Beijing’s broader strategy to deepen economic cooperation with African nations.

Wang spoke on Sunday during a press conference held alongside the annual session of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country’s top political advisory body.

China had earlier announced plans to fully implement the zero-tariff initiative for 53 African countries, including Nigeria, under the Changsha Declaration adopted within the framework of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

The policy is designed to allow more African goods — particularly agricultural products, manufactured items and other quality exports — to enter China’s large consumer market without import duties.

According to Wang, the initiative forms part of China’s commitment to expanding trade and strengthening economic ties with the African continent.

“As part of China’s commitment to high-standard opening up, we are removing tariffs completely to boost trade, multiply benefits for the people, and help Africa access the enormous opportunities of the Chinese market,” he said.

He explained that the measure aligns with China’s broader plan to deepen its partnership with Africa and promote shared economic growth between both sides.

Wang also noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping attaches great importance to China’s relationship with African countries, emphasising cooperation built on mutual respect, sincerity and shared interests.

According to the minister, this approach has helped elevate China–Africa relations and strengthened collaboration in trade, development and infrastructure across the continent.

He further stated that China remains committed to supporting countries of the Global South and called on the international community to uphold genuine multilateral cooperation.
