President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Lamido Abubakar Yuguda, a former Director‑General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), as Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Gatekeepers News reports that the announcement was made in a statement issued on March 11, 2026, by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
The nomination is in line with Section 8(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which governs appointments to the apex bank’s leadership.
Yuguda’s nomination follows the recent appointment of the previous CBN Deputy Governor, Bala Bello, who was redeployed to serve as Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy.
Before this nomination, Yuguda led the SEC from 2020 to 2024, where he oversaw reforms designed to strengthen Nigeria’s capital markets and improve confidence among investors.
The former SEC DG is widely regarded as a seasoned financial sector professional with extensive experience in banking regulation and capital market administration.
In urging Yuguda’s confirmation, the presidency has tasked him to bring “renewed dedication, professionalism, and commitment” to maintaining Nigeria’s economic stability and growth once sworn in.
The Senate must now screen and confirm Yuguda before he can officially take up the deputy Governor role at the apex bank.
