Labour Party (LP) has announced that its presidential ticket for 2027 general elections has been officially zoned to southern Nigeria, effectively ruling out aspirants from northern region.

Gatekeepers News reports that the decision was disclosed by Nenadi Usman during a briefing in Abuja, where she stated that the party had reached a firm internal agreement on the matter. She emphasized that no northern candidate would be considered for the party’s presidential race.

According to Usman, the zoning arrangement is final, stressing that any attempt by northern aspirants to contest under the party would not be accepted.

Despite confirming the regional zoning, the party leadership declined to mention any preferred candidate, noting that the eventual flagbearer would emerge through a democratic primary process involving party members.

The development comes amid ongoing internal restructuring within the party. Usman revealed that a court case challenging the dissolution of the party’s national caretaker committee had been dismissed for lacking merit, strengthening the current leadership’s position.

She also hinted that the party may review the timeline for its upcoming congresses due to a surge in membership, warning that sticking to the original schedule could disenfranchise new entrants.

The zoning decision is expected to shape political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as parties begin early strategies on regional balance and candidate selection.
