Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a strong warning to manufacturers and distributors against producing or circulating unsafe products, stressing that violations will attract strict regulatory sanctions.

Gatekeepers News reports that the warning was delivered by the commission’s Executive Vice-Chairman, Tunji Bello, during the 2026 World Consumer Rights Day celebration and the ninth National Consumer Protection Awards held in Abuja.

Represented by Boladale Adeyinka, director of surveillance and investigation, Bello said the commission continues to encounter products across various sectors that fail to meet basic safety and quality standards.

He highlighted issues such as improperly labelled goods, substandard products, and cases of misrepresentation, noting that such practices expose consumers to serious risks and undermine trust in the market.

According to the FCCPC, product safety is not optional but a legal obligation under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, adding that any breach would be met with enforcement actions in line with its mandate.

The commission also revealed that it has intensified market surveillance and strengthened product testing in key sectors to curb the spread of unsafe goods. It further stated that it is working closely with other regulatory bodies to close gaps that allow such products into the Nigerian market.

Bello urged manufacturers, importers, and service providers to prioritise safety at every stage of production and distribution, warning that failure to comply would trigger regulatory consequences.

He also called on consumers to remain vigilant and report unsafe or suspicious products, noting that effective consumer protection depends on active public participation.
