Dauda Lawal, Governor of Zamfara State, has been honoured with the “Outstanding Governor of the Year” award at a high-profile event held in London, United Kingdom.
Gatekeepers News reports that fhe recognition was conferred by Triangle Media International Magazine during its 10th annual lecture and awards ceremony, which took place at the Grand Hall of King’s College London on Thursday.
According to a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris, the award celebrates leaders in both the public and private sectors who have demonstrated impactful governance and improved service delivery.
The event, themed “Harnessing the Roles of Nigerians in Diaspora for National Development,” brought together policymakers, business leaders, and members of the Nigerian diaspora to discuss strategies for national growth and development.
Idris said the recognition reflects the achievements recorded under Lawal’s administration since he assumed office on May 29, 2023, particularly in stabilising governance structures and delivering key public services in the state.
He noted that despite inheriting significant financial challenges, including an almost empty treasury, the Governor has pursued his “rescue agenda” aimed at rebuilding critical sectors in Zamfara.
Part of the achievements cited for the award include efforts to address insecurity through education-focused interventions, such as declaring a state of emergency in the education sector and investing heavily in school infrastructure.
The administration was also credited with clearing outstanding examination fees, including about N3.4 billion owed for WAEC and NECO, and initiating the renovation and reconstruction of schools across all 14 local government areas of the state.
“The International magazine finds these initiatives to be strategic interventions toward long-term efforts to make Zamfara State better,” the statement added.
The ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and Kola Adesina, highlighting the significance of the recognition within political and business circles.
The latest award adds to a growing list of recognitions for Lawal, whose administration has recently been acknowledged for reforms in education, infrastructure, and public service delivery aimed at improving living standards in the state.
