Lilian Afegbai Apologises Over AMVCA Snub Outburst

Nollywood actress Lilian Afegbai has expressed regret over her reaction after missing out on a nomination for Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), admitting that her earlier comments were inappropriate.

Gatekeepers News reports that the actress had previously voiced frustration about not being recognised for her work, sparking reactions online. However, in a subsequent statement, she acknowledged that her response did not reflect the level of respect expected.

Taking responsibility for her actions, Afegbai admitted that her outburst was unnecessary and has since apologised to the organisers and the public.

She described her reaction as disrespectful, noting that emotions got the better of her at the time. The actress also emphasised her continued respect for the awards platform and its organisers.

The actress said, “That tweet should not have happened. No excuse. It was disrespectful to AMVCA, the nominees, my To Kill A Monkey family, and all of you who have supported me.”

“Honestly, I was disappointed. But that’s not an excuse for how I responded.” She shared that she had felt invisible for a long time, and her role in To Kill A Monkey felt like a big moment in her career.”

“When I wasn’t nominated, I reacted from a place of hurt, entitlement. I was wrong, and I am sorry”.

Her apology comes after criticism from fans and industry observers who felt her initial reaction was excessive, especially given the prestige of the AMVCA within the African film industry.

Afegbai concluded by reaffirming her commitment to her craft and maintaining professionalism moving forward.
