Lagos Business School (LBS) has unveiled the Professor Albert Alos Endowed Chair in Strategic Management, marking a major step in its efforts to strengthen strategic thought leadership across Africa.
Gatekeepers News reports that the announcement was made during a ceremony held on March 25, 2026, at the Federal Palace Hotel and Casino, with alumni, corporate leaders, faculty members, and partners in attendance.
The event honoured Albert Alos, founding dean of LBS and former Vice-Chancellor of Pan-Atlantic University, whose leadership played a pivotal role in shaping the institution’s growth and reputation.
With the theme, “Legacy, leadership and the frontier of strategic management,” the gathering reflected on past achievements while focusing on future impact.
Dean of LBS, Olayinka David-West, opened the event with a welcome address, emphasising the school’s commitment to building on its legacy and expanding its influence in strategic thinking.
A tribute session titled “Legacy Tribute – Architect of Excellence” highlighted Alos’s foundational role and his mentorship of generations of business leaders.
During the alumni reflections segment, Clare Omatseye and Lawrence Mba shared personal accounts of how Alos shaped their careers and leadership approaches.
Representing Alumni President Owen Omogiafo, Alumni Vice President Valentine Okelu reaffirmed the alumni body’s commitment to supporting the initiative, describing it as a collective responsibility to sustain the school’s legacy of excellence.
Speaking on “The Strategic Imperative: Advancing Strategic Thought Leadership for Africa,” Fabian Ajogwu stressed the importance of developing Africa-driven frameworks in strategy, governance, and leadership.
He noted that as global systems become increasingly complex, African institutions must adopt context-specific approaches that reflect local realities while remaining globally competitive.
The formal unveiling of the endowed chair was a highlight of the event, accompanied by the launch of a Founders’ Circle initiative aimed at mobilising support for the programme. The initiative is designed to create a sustainable platform for research, teaching, and engagement in strategic management.
Born in Barcelona, Spain, Alos studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Bilbao, where he earned a doctorate in 1966. He began his academic career in Kenya before relocating to Nigeria in 1967, teaching at institutions such as the University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, and Obafemi Awolowo University.
He later became the founding dean of LBS and pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Pan-Atlantic University, playing a central role in advancing management education and ethical business leadership in Africa. In recognition of his contributions, he was granted Nigerian citizenship in 2022.
The ceremony concluded with a toast by Ejovi Aror and closing remarks from Raymond Ihyembe, chairman of the Endowed Chair Committee.
LBS also acknowledged the support of sponsors and media partners, including Federal Palace Hotel and Casino, SLOT Systems Limited, Kenna, Channels Television, BusinessDay Media, and The Guardian Nigeria, as well as members of the Endowed Chair Committee for their contributions to the initiative.
