Fresh political tension has engulfed the Ondo State House of Assembly as Speaker Olamide Oladiji is reportedly facing impeachment moves over allegations surrounding the handling of ₦44 million released by Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC).
Gatekeepers News reports that the development follows accusations by Hon. Olawumi Fayemi-Obayelu, who represents Ilaje Constituency II, that the funds meant for oil-producing communities were mismanaged.
Fayemi-Obayelu alleged that her investigation into the disbursement of the funds uncovered irregularities and claimed she had received repeated threats to abandon the probe. She further alleged that she narrowly escaped an attack, insisting that intimidation would not stop her from pursuing accountability over the matter.
The controversy has reportedly intensified pressure within the Assembly, with lawmakers said to be weighing impeachment proceedings against the Speaker and other principal officers over the alleged financial scandal. Reports indicate that the matter has deepened divisions among members of the House.
However, Speaker Oladiji has denied any wrongdoing, dismissing the allegations as false and politically motivated. He has also rejected claims that there is any financial scandal involving him or that an impeachment process has been formally initiated, maintaining that the accusations are aimed at tarnishing his reputation.
