The United States has commended Nigeria for securing 386 convictions in terrorism-related cases, describing the move as a major step in strengthening justice and accountability.

Gatekeepers News reports that the commendation was made by Massad Boulos, who praised the Nigerian government for accelerating the prosecution of long-pending terrorism cases. He said the convictions demonstrate a strong commitment to tackling extremism through the rule of law.

The US noted that many of the cases had faced delays for years, but the recent mass trials helped fast-track justice. It emphasised that transparent and timely legal processes are essential in addressing terrorism and building public trust in the judiciary.

Nigeria’s Attorney-General, Lateef Fagbemi, had earlier disclosed that the convictions were secured from 508 terrorism-related cases handled during the trials. The exercise is considered one of the largest coordinated efforts to clear a backlog of terrorism cases in the country.

The development comes amid broader efforts by the federal government to clamp down on terrorism financing and extremist networks, including the release of a sanctions list targeting individuals and organisations linked to such activities.

The mass convictions also reflect Nigeria’s ongoing battle against insurgency and violent extremism, particularly in the northern region where groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP have remained active.
