Justin Fairfax, a former lieutenant governor of the US state of Virginia, has died after fatally shooting his wife, Cerina Fairfax, before turning the gun on himself.
Gatekeepers News reports that the tragedy occurred at the couple’s residence in Annandale, Virginia, in the early hours of Thursday. Police said the incident followed a prolonged domestic dispute linked to an ongoing and “messy” divorce between the pair.
Authorities revealed that the couple, though separated, were still living in the same house with their two teenage children at the time of the incident. One of the children reportedly alerted emergency services after the shooting.
Investigators noted that legal tensions had escalated in recent months, including court proceedings related to their divorce. Officials believe these disputes may have contributed to the fatal confrontation.
Police also disclosed that there had been prior domestic incidents, including an earlier claim by Fairfax alleging assault, which was later disproved by home surveillance footage.
Justin Fairfax, who served as Virginia’s lieutenant Governor from 2018 to 2022, was once regarded as a rising political figure before his career declined following past controversies.
The incident has shocked political circles in the United States, with leaders expressing condolences to the family, particularly the couple’s children, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
