Sanwo-Olu Throws Weight Behind Hamzat

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, for the 2027 governorship race, describing him as the “best man for the job.”

Gatekeepers Newreports that the endorsement came during a meeting with party leaders at the governor’s office in Alausa, Lagos, according to a video seen by TheCable on Monday.

Addressing stakeholders at the gathering, Sanwo-Olu offered prayers for Hamzat, wishing him strength, peace and divine guidance as he pursues future political ambitions.

“Peace of mind, peace in your family among your children, wife, spouse and everybody. That which you require, God will provide it for you: renewed strength, God Almighty will make it available for you,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu also thanked party leaders for their continued support and expressed confidence in Hamzat’s leadership capacity.

In a symbolic moment at the close of the meeting, the governor embraced his deputy and raised his hand before party members and leaders, drawing applause from those in attendance.

The development comes amid growing speculation over likely contenders for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket in Lagos ahead of the 2027 election, with Hamzat increasingly seen as a leading aspirant.

However, questions over whether the party has settled for a preferred candidate remain unresolved.

Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor and a former governorship candidate, had earlier dismissed reports suggesting the party had adopted a consensus aspirant.

In a statement issued through his spokesperson, Gbenga Ogunleye, Jandor said no formal decision had been taken by the party leadership.

He added, however, that he would abide by the party’s eventual decision should it choose to adopt a consensus candidate for the race.
