Tobi Amusan delivered an impressive performance at the Xiamen Diamond League in China, finishing second in the women’s 100m hurdles while setting a new season’s best time.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Nigerian sprint hurdler clocked 12.28 seconds to take silver behind American Olympic champion Masai Russell, who won the race in 12.14 seconds — the second-fastest time ever recorded in the event.
Amusan’s time improved on her previous season best of 12.41 seconds and marked one of the fastest runs of her career in the women’s 100m hurdles.
The world record holder initially trailed Russell and Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton out of the blocks but recovered strongly in the closing stages to secure second place ahead of Charlton, who finished third in 12.37 seconds.
The highly anticipated race in Xiamen featured some of the world’s leading hurdlers, including Olympic, world and Diamond League champions.
Amusan, who holds the women’s 100m hurdles world record of 12.12 seconds set at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, is continuing preparations for the major athletics competitions later this season.
The 29-year-old recently claimed a third consecutive African title in the 100m hurdles and is expected to compete again at the next Wanda Diamond League meeting in Rabat, Morocco, on May 31.
