Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a staff member of the University of Benin over an alleged N3.2 million fraud before a court in Benin City, Edo State.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to reports, the defendant was brought before the court on charges bordering on obtaining money under false pretences after allegedly collecting N3.2 million from a complainant on the promise of securing admission into the university. The anti-graft agency alleged that the promise was never fulfilled, while the money was not refunded.
The EFCC told the court that the accused received the funds through a bank account and allegedly misrepresented his ability to facilitate admission into the institution. The commission said the actions contravened provisions of the law relating to fraud and obtaining by false pretence.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read in court. Following the plea, the prosecution requested a trial date, while the defence sought bail for the accused.
The court subsequently granted bail and adjourned the matter to a later date for the commencement of trial. The EFCC said it would present evidence to support the allegations during the proceedings.
