South Africa’s run at 2026 FIFA World Cup ended in the Round of 32 after Canada secured a 1-0 victory to book a place in the last 16 of the tournament.
Gatekeepers News reports that the closely fought encounter remained goalless for most of the match before Canada found the breakthrough in stoppage time through Stephen Eustáquio, sealing a historic knockout-stage victory for the co-hosts.
Canada controlled much of the possession and created the better chances but were repeatedly denied by South Africa’s defence. Their persistence eventually paid off in the closing moments as they secured a place in the next round.
Despite the defeat, South Africa impressed during the tournament by reaching the knockout stage and competing strongly against one of the host nations. Coach Hugo Broos said his side gave a good account of themselves but fell short against a physically stronger opponent.
The victory sends Canada into the last 16, where they will face the winner of the Round of 32 clash between the Netherlands and Morocco as they continue their World Cup campaign.
