Flight Operations Resume At Lagos Airport After Flooding Disruption— FAAN

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says normal flight operations have resumed at the temporary terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos after flooding disrupted activities at the facility.

Gatekeepers News reports that according to FAAN, the flooding was caused by drainage challenges linked to ongoing construction work at the airport. Henry Agbebire, the agency’s director of public affairs and consumer protection, said the incident was localised and was swiftly brought under control through contingency measures.

The flooding prompted the temporary relocation of some international airlines, including Air France-KLM, Ethiopian Airlines and Fly Gabon, to another terminal while engineers worked to address the problem. FAAN said the affected carriers have since returned to their normal operating location following the restoration of services.

Agbebire stated that although water entered parts of the terminal and disrupted operations, no flights were cancelled and passenger safety was not compromised during the incident.

The authority also announced that corrective measures are being implemented to strengthen drainage infrastructure at the airport and prevent a recurrence, especially as the rainy season intensifies. FAAN said it will continue monitoring the situation and prioritise flood-prevention efforts at the facility.

The development comes amid broader concerns over flooding in parts of Lagos following heavy rainfall that has affected roads, homes and public infrastructure across the state.
