Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo has suffered a devastating personal loss after his wife and two children were confirmed dead following the powerful twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela.
Gatekeepers News reports that Trejo, who plays for Venezuelan second-division side Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira, spent three days searching through the rubble for his wife, Yanina, and their children, Aaron and Ainhoa, before rescue workers recovered their bodies.
In a statement posted on Instagram, the club expressed its condolences to the player and his family.
“Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira deeply mourns the irreparable loss of our player’s wife and children,” the club said.
The 38-year-old was attending his team’s training camp in Caracas when the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck on Wednesday evening.
According to reports, Trejo immediately travelled back to his home in La Guaira, the state hardest hit by the disaster, where he was confronted with widespread destruction.
“He found absolutely nothing of what the building itself had been,” Trejo’s brother-in-law, Ricardo Ardiles, told CNN.
Venezuelan authorities said on Sunday that nearly 1,500 people had lost their lives in the disaster, while tens of thousands of others remained unaccounted for as rescue and recovery operations continued.
