The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to stage a nationwide protest targeting South African-linked businesses in Nigeria, including telecommunications giant MTN and pay-TV operator MultiChoice.

Gatekeepers Newreports that the association also called on Nigerians to close their accounts with Stanbic IBTC Bank as part of the planned action.

Speaking on the proposed protest, the NANS President said the move was in response to what he described as South Africa’s treatment of Nigeria and Nigerians.

He said the student body was prepared to mobilise its members across the country to ensure the protest is carried out.

“We are going to shut down MTN and MultiChoice. We will force Nigerians to close their accounts with Stanbic IBTC Bank,” the NANS President said.

According to him, the planned demonstration is intended to mount pressure on South African-linked companies operating in Nigeria.

He urged students and members of the public to support the protest, insisting it was aimed at drawing attention to concerns over Nigeria’s relations with South Africa.

Further details on the planned nationwide protest are expected as events unfold.
