President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene in the deteriorating condition of the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road, where motorists and commuters have been stranded for days due to severe gridlock.
Gatekeepers News reports that Minister of Works David Umahi disclosed this on Tuesday, saying the President ordered immediate corrective measures to restore movement and ease the hardship being experienced by road users.
Umahi said he had moved to implement the directive and would personally lead the intervention on the affected corridor.
The minister arrived in Benin, Edo State, on Tuesday alongside members of the National Assembly committees on works to assess the situation and begin discussions on immediate solutions.
The meeting is expected to involve representatives of the Edo and Delta state governments as well as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
The intervention follows days of worsening gridlock caused by failed portions and the deteriorating condition of the highway. Some travellers reportedly abandoned their vehicles and trekked to find alternative means of transportation, while the prolonged congestion disrupted the movement of goods and commercial activities.
Residents and motorists had also protested the condition of the Benin-Agbor bypass on August 20, demanding urgent repairs as vehicles struggled through muddy sections of the road.
Umahi said the Federal Government was committed to taking immediate steps to restore traffic flow and reduce the hardship faced by commuters along the strategic corridor.
