Coastal Road Crash Claims One And Leaves Three Seriously Injured

One person has died while three others sustained serious injuries in a road traffic crash along the Coastal Road in the Victoria Island area of Lagos.

Gatekeepers News reports that the accident occurred in the early hours of Friday and involved a grey Lexus Jeep 350, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

In a statement by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, the agency said preliminary information indicated that the vehicle lost control, crashed into a roadside pole and overturned.

“Preliminary security information indicated that the vehicle reportedly lost control, violently collided with a roadside pole and subsequently overturned, resulting in three seriously injured victims and one fatality,” Taofiq said.

He said LASTMA operatives monitoring traffic around the Coastal Road axis “swiftly mobilised to the scene, secured the affected section of the carriageway and facilitated immediate emergency response”.

According to him, the three “critically injured victims were extricated” from the wreckage with the “assistance of Good Samaritans and promptly conveyed” to Duck-Yard Hospital within the Military Zone for medical attention.

“The incident was subsequently brought under control, while relevant emergency and security agencies were engaged to undertake the requisite rescue, investigative and safety procedures,” the statement read in part.

LASTMA said security personnel from Victoria Island provided additional security support at the scene, while its officers removed the mangled vehicle from the carriageway to prevent a possible secondary collision and restore normal traffic flow.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condoled with the family of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads.

Bakare-Oki called for heightened vigilance, judicious speed management and strict compliance with traffic regulations, warning that excessive speed, reckless driving and loss of vehicle control could have “devastating and irreversible consequences” for motorists and other road users.

He also urged motorists and members of the public to promptly report road crashes, vehicle breakdowns, obstructions and other emergencies through LASTMA’s toll-free short code, 3367, to enable swift intervention.
