Amos Dangut Becomes 14th WAEC Registrar/CEO

Nigerian education administrator Amos Dangut has assumed office as the new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

Gatekeepers News reports that Dangut took over as the 14th Registrar of the council on October 1, 2026, months after his appointment. The development was contained in a statement by Demianus Ojijeogu, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters in Accra, Ghana.

He will serve a five-year tenure from October 2026 to September 2031, succeeding Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

Before his new appointment, Dangut served as the Head of WAEC’s National Office in Nigeria from October 2, 2023, until his assumption of office as Registrar.

The International Governing Board of WAEC ratified his appointment at the council’s 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra in March 2026.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, obtained in 1991; a Master of Science in Animal Science, 1994; a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science, 2017; and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning, 2020.

His career in education began in 1994 when he joined St Louis College, Jos, where he worked as an examiner with WAEC. He subsequently joined the council as a staff member in 1998.

Dangut, a test developer and administrator, has held several positions within WAEC, including Assistant Registrar/Subject Officer in the Test Development Division, Ogba, Lagos; Senior Assistant Registrar/Head of Examinations Security and Deputy Branch Controller in Uyo and Bauchi; Senior Assistant Registrar/Branch Controller in Yola; Deputy Registrar/Controller of the Post Examinations Department; Deputy Registrar/Zonal Coordinator of the Ikeja Zonal Office; and Deputy Registrar in the Head of National Office’s Office.

WAEC described the new Registrar as experienced in test development, test administration, as well as branch and zonal office management.

“He is well-skilled and versatile in Test Development, Test Administration, and Branch and Zonal Office Management. For more than two decades, he has leveraged Information and Communications Technology to innovatively improve processes in Test Development, Post-Test Activities, and test administration,” the council said.

It added that Dangut had demonstrated “integrity, transparency, diligence, and a strong commitment to service” throughout his career.

According to WAEC, his contributions were recognised through a commendation from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for his handling of examination matters between 2000 and 2006, as well as an Award for Meritorious Service from the Ondo State Government and Akoko South Local Government during his National Youth Service Corps programme.

As Head of the National Office, Dangut served on the governing boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and Grange Educational Foundation.

He also represented WAEC at education policy platforms, including the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.

The council said Dangut introduced several measures during his tenure as Head of National Office to improve examination delivery, security, integrity and efficiency.

“During his tenure as Head of National Office, he championed innovations to strengthen examination delivery, security, integrity and efficiency. These included rolling out Computer-Based WASSCE, serialising question papers, and introducing a Digital Electronic Marking System,” WAEC said.

The council added that he also oversaw the development and implementation of the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive, as well as systems for examination logistics, timetable management and monitoring examiners’ attendance.

WAEC described Dangut as “an astute scholar with publications in both international and national journals”, noting that he had presented keynote and other papers at international and national conferences.

He currently serves as the Regional Representative of the West African sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.
