Seyi Makinde, presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), has promised to serve only one four-year term if elected president in the 2027 general election, saying his administration would operate as a transitional government of national unity.
Gatekeepers News reports that Makinde made the pledge on Saturday at the APM town hall meeting in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, where he outlined his plans to address insecurity, poverty, electricity shortages and other challenges facing the country.
“Our government will not last beyond four years. And it will be an all-inclusive government,” he said.
The Oyo State governor said his proposed administration would prioritise national unity, listen to citizens and pursue practical solutions to the country’s problems without politicising issues affecting their welfare.
“My promise to you, the north-east and the people of Nigeria is this: we will be sincere in finding solutions to the challenges that we are faced with,” he said.
“We will not play politics. We will not undermine your rights. We will ensure that we tell you the exact truth. We will listen to you. Solutions can come from anywhere.”
According to Makinde, the proposed four-year transitional government would provide an opportunity to address concerns about political representation and the rotation of power between northern and southern Nigeria.
His pledge follows a similar commitment by Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), who has also promised to serve a single four-year term if elected president in 2027.
During the meeting, Makinde criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of failing to fulfil its promises on electricity supply and other critical sectors.
He recalled Tinubu’s campaign promise to fix Nigeria’s electricity challenges within four years, arguing that the administration had not delivered on the commitment.
“The current administration came in and told us that it had the magic wand to solve the challenges confronting us. So, we are all aware that they have failed to provide electricity and other things they promised. So, I believe we all know how to cast our ballots,” he said.
The APM candidate also criticised the Federal Government’s compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicle policies, as well as its naira-for-crude initiative, describing the policies as failures.
Makinde called on the government to publish its petroleum pricing template to enable Nigerians to understand how the prices of petrol and other petroleum products were determined.
He argued that the document should be made available for public scrutiny, adding that Nigerians with relevant knowledge should be allowed to contribute ideas towards resolving the country’s economic challenges.
The governor also urged Nigerians to vote in the 2027 elections, describing the forthcoming poll as an opportunity to establish a new direction for the country.
“2027 will mark the end of the politics of lies and deceit. It is a time when we will all come together to establish a reset agenda and tell Nigerians the whole truth,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, the APM’s national leader, expressed support for Makinde’s presidential ambition, saying the party was committed to inclusivity, mutual respect and providing opportunities for Nigerians across different regions.
