African Golfers Set For 65th Lagos Amateur Open Championship

The 65th Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship will hold from November 16 to 22, 2026, at the golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938 in Lagos.

Gatekeepers News reports that the tournament, widely regarded as Nigeria’s longest-running golf competition, is expected to attract amateur golfers from across Africa competing for points on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) circuit.

Organisers described this year’s edition as a landmark event in the championship’s history, which spans more than six decades.

Babatunde Oyalami emerged champion at the 64th edition last year after recording rounds of 78, 75 and 78 for a gross total of 231 over 54 holes. The Osun-based golfer finished three strokes ahead of his closest challenger and is now pursuing a professional career.

The championship is sponsored by First Bank of Nigeria through its first@sports initiative, which supports sporting development and competition in the country.

FirstBank said its continued investment in sports reflects its commitment to Nigeria’s socio-economic development. The bank’s sponsorship portfolio also covers polo, basketball and tennis.

With a history spanning more than 60 years, the Lagos Amateur Open has established itself as a major fixture on Nigeria’s golfing calendar, while contributing to youth development and providing amateur golfers with opportunities to showcase their talents.

The 2026 edition is expected to sustain the tournament’s tradition of promoting competitive golf and nurturing emerging talent across the country.
