Nigeria has won the bid to host the 2028 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) African Championships after defeating Tunisia in the voting process.
Gatekeepers News reports that Nigeria secured 23 votes against Tunisia’s 15 at the ITTF Africa Annual General Meeting held in Tangier, Morocco, on Thursday.
Adesoji Tayo, president of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), said the tournament would take place in Lagos, expressing confidence that the country would deliver a world-class competition.
“We want to thank all the delegates for placing their trust in Nigeria to host both the 2028 African Championships and the 2027 African Para Championships,” Tayo said.
He added that Nigeria was committed to ensuring a smooth tournament and welcoming the continent’s leading players to Lagos.
Nigeria also secured the hosting rights for the 2027 African Para Championships, giving the country two continental table tennis competitions to organise within two years.
The country last hosted the ITTF African Championships in 1992, when Nigerian players, including Funke Oshonaike and Segun Toriola, competed in the tournament and won titles in individual and doubles events.
The hosting decision forms part of ITTF Africa’s schedule of continental competitions for 2027 and 2028.
Other host countries confirmed at the meeting include Libya for the 2027 Africa Cup, Algeria for the 2027 African Championships, Botswana for the 2027 Youth Championships, Rwanda for the 2028 Youth Championships and Egypt for the 2028 Para Championships.
Nigeria’s successful bid comes as the country seeks to strengthen its position in African table tennis and attract major international sporting events to Lagos.
The 2028 championships are expected to bring together leading players from across the continent to compete for African titles.
