Elumelu’s $1m Personal Loan Helped Afrinvest Survive Financial Crisis – Ike Chioke

The Group Managing Director of Afrinvest (West Africa) Limited, Ike Chioke, has expressed profound gratitude to the Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Tony Elumelu, for extending a one-million-dollar personal loan to him in 2011 when the investment firm was facing financial difficulties.

Gatekeepers News reports that Chioke, in a letter dated October 14, 2026, said the loan came at a critical period when Afrinvest was struggling to rebuild and recapitalise its business following the global financial crisis.

He recalled that Elumelu provided the funds when the company’s future was uncertain, saying, “You placed your confidence not simply in the prospects of a business, but in me as an individual, my integrity, my determination and my conviction that Afrinvest could emerge stronger from adversity.”

The Afrinvest chief said the intervention played an important role in helping the company navigate the difficult period and transform into a diversified financial services group serving a growing number of clients.

He noted that the company had continued to contribute to the development of Nigeria’s capital market, adding that Elumelu’s confidence in him and the business had been vindicated.

Chioke disclosed that he fully repaid the longstanding personal loan in June 2026, saying he was touched by Elumelu’s reaction when he informed him of the repayment.

He said, “For me, the repayment was about much more than settling a financial debt. It was about honouring a commitment to someone who believed in me when that belief mattered most.”

He also drew parallels between his experience and the philosophy championed by the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which provides African entrepreneurs with access to capital, mentorship and opportunities.

Praising the foundation’s work, Chioke said Elumelu’s determination to “democratise luck” had helped transform the aspirations of entrepreneurs into businesses, livelihoods and opportunities across the continent.

He described himself as an early beneficiary of the businessman’s philosophy, noting that Elumelu extended support to him long before the foundation began empowering entrepreneurs across Africa on a large scale.

“I know from personal experience what a difference that single act of confidence can make. It is a powerful testament to the multiplier effect of generosity, and to the enduring value of investing in people,” he said.

Chioke thanked Elumelu for believing in him and supporting Afrinvest during a difficult period, adding that although the financial obligation had been fully discharged, his gratitude would remain.

He concluded by wishing Elumelu, his family and the foundation continued success in creating opportunities for generations of African entrepreneurs.
