Austria has agreed to pay for Russia gas in rubles.

Gatekeepers News reports that Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced that his government, together with Austrian oil company OMV, has agreed to pay for Russian gas imports in rubles.

Russia had earlier suspended gas deliveries to Poland and Bulgaria for not complying with its demands.

According to a Russian news agency TASS, Nehammer said Austria and Germany both accepted the terms of the gas payments as they were “found to be in line with the terms of the sanctions.”

The Austrian Chancellor previously stated it is “not possible” for the European Union to impose sanctions on Russian gas.

On March 23, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered that unfriendly states must pay for Russian gas in rubles, stating that Moscow would refuse to accept payments under gas contracts with those states in “compromised” currencies, particularly meaning dollars and euros.
