Fire has engulfed some shops at Kano Street, behind Main Market in Onitsha, Anambra State, Southeast Nigeria.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Onitsha Main Market is one the biggest market in West Africa.
According to reports, the men of the Anambra State Fire Service have been on the ground to extinguish the fire which started at around 1am on Monday.
Sources at the scene said that the fire is currently razing a section of the market, as a trader confirmed that two blocks of shops have been affected.
According to the trader, attempts by firemen to put it off have been fruitless.
As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.
The Chief Fire Fighter in Anambra State, Martin Agbili, confirmed the incident, saying that he promptly deployed his men in the area when he was alerted.
Martin Agbili said, “The fire started around 1am, and I quickly deployed my men there.
“So far, they have gone to refill the fire trucks with water twice, and our men have gone to refill a third time.”
