Former South African President, Jacob Zuma has surrendered himself to the Police to serve a 15-month jail sentence for contempt of court.

Gatekeepers News reports that Zuma was taken to Estcourt Correctional Centre in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.

South Africa’s constitutional court had sentenced Zuma to jail on the 29th of June after he frequently refused to appear before corruption investigators to give evidence.

The sentence led to an uproar in the country which has never seen a former president jailed before.

Initially, Zuma had vowed to defy the court order, saying ‘he will not go to jail’. The former President said he had sent letters to the court pleading the case that his sentencing “was wrong to ask and if they can reduce it or strike it out”.

Gatekeepers News reports that his supporters had also said they would render the country ungovernable if Zuma ends up in jail.

Dudu Zuma-Sambudla, the African leader’s daughter, later tweeted that her father was “en route (to the jail) and he is still in high spirits”.
