Nigerian Government has awarded a $3.02bn Rail contract to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
Gatekeepers News reports that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had, in a meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in October 2020, approved $3.02 billion contract for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Port Harcourt to Maiduguri Eastern Railway line.
“The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the award of contracts for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri eastern narrow-gauge railway, with new branch lines and trans-shipment facilities,” Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi had disclosed.
CCECC, a subsidiary of China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) has sealed a contract with Nigeria’s Ministry of Transportation for the development of the Nigerian Eastern Railway, according to Railway Technology’s report.
The Nigerian Government is, however, yet to officially confirm the report on the contract award.
Gatekeepers News reports that the scope of the contract includes the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the railway network spanning from Port Harcourt to the northern city of Maiduguri.
The eastern railway network, which passes through 12 states, links many major cities in the eastern region.
Aside from the construction work on the current eastern railway line, the project will also include the development of additional branch tracks.
