We Did Not Shoot Sowore – Police

Federal Capital Territory Police has said none of its officers shot Omoyele Sowore.

Gatekeepers News reports that there seems to be a war of words between Sowore and the Federal Capital Territory Police Command. The Police Command has said Sowore lied that its officers shot at him.

A spokesperson for the command, Mariam Yusuf, in a statement said contrary to the report, police operatives deployed in the scene professionally restored calm at the protest venue.

The police said operatives of the command was deployed to prevent them from causing a breakdown of the law and order.

Sowore had alleged via micro-mini blog Twitter, that a particular Police ACP Atine “shot” at him at the unity fountain, Abuja.

He Tweeted:

“Just been shot by a police officer, ACP Atine at the Unity Fountain in Abuja. #RevolutionNow Let the struggle continue even if they take my life! #BuhariMustGo.”

The statement read:

“The FCT Command wishes to debunk the viral message in some sections of the social media purporting that ‘Omoyele Sowore was shot by a female Assistant Commissioner of Police’ at the Unity Fountain.

“Contrary to the speculation, police operatives professionally restored calm at the Unity Fountain following attempts by a group of protesters to incite a public disturbance.

“The protesters, who went on the rampage, were resisted by police operatives to prevent them from causing a breakdown of the law and order. There is no record of such an incident as of the time of this release.

“The command enjoins residents to remain calm and law-abiding while reaffirming its commitment towards the protection of lives and property within the FCT.”

Sowore, a Nigerian human rights activist, pro-democracy campaigner and founder of an online news agency Sahara Reporters, was the candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 Presidential election.
