Plot to oust Israel’s longest-serving Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu deepens as his political rivals join forces to form a coalition.
Gatekeepers News reports that Israeli far-right politician, Naftali Bennett joined hands with the leader of centrist Yesh Atid party, Yair Lapid to form a government that would bring Netanyahu’s long rule to an end.
Bennett, who was Netanyahu’s Defence Minister, claimed that his decision to join forces with Lapid is to prevent the country from sliding into a fifth consecutive election in just more than two years.
“It’s my intention to do my utmost in order to form a national unity government along with my friend Yair Lapid, so that, God willing, together we can save the country from a tailspin and return Israel to its course,” Bennett said on Sunday after meeting with his party, Yamina, which hold a crucial six seats in the 120-member parliament.
Gatekeepers News reports that each of the four elections conducted in the past ended in deadlock and were seen as a referendum on Netanyahu.
Lapid, 57, is expected to form a new coalition government by Wednesday, 2nd of June, 2021. He was initially given a 28-day ultimatum that was interrupted by the recent 11-day conflict in Gaza.
Gatekeepers News gathered that Netanyahu’s Likud party had on Saturday made an offer to Bennett and the leader of another potential coalition party to share the premiership in a three-way split, but the offer was turned down.
