Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari has announced the deactivation of her Twitter account.
Gatekeepers News reports that the First Lady took to the social media platform to make known her decision on Friday night.
Without stating the reasons for the development, she further wished the Federal Republic of Nigeria the best.
“I will be deactivating my twitter account for now,” she wrote
“Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she added.
In reaction to the tweet, Nigerians have taken to the response session to express themselves over the development.
While some questioned the decision, some noted that the first lady has acted in relation to the suspension of Twitter as announced by the Federal Government.
In a statement on Friday, Nigeria’s communications minister Lai Mohammed announced the suspension, citing persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence as a reason for the suspension.
Minister Mohammed accused Twitter of ignoring inciting tweets by the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, and others, adding that Nigeria would not be fooled.
“We have a country to rule and we will do so to the best of our ability. Twitter’s mission in Nigeria is very suspect, they have an agenda,” he said.
“The mission of Twitter in Nigeria is very suspicious. Has Twitter deleted the violent tweets that Nnamdi Kanu has been sending? Has it? The same Twitter during the ENDSARS protests that were funding ENDSARS protesters, it was the first to close the account of the former president of the US, Trump.
“And you see when people were burning police stations and killing policemen in Nigeria during ENDSARS, for Twitter, it was about the right to protest. But when a similar thing happened on the Capitol, it became insurrection.”
