Telecommunications Companies are seeking quick resolution of the ban on Twitter in Nigeria.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), says it is in talks with ‘stakeholders’ to resolve the Twitter ban.
ATCON President, Ikechuckwu Nnamani in a statement said the move is to ensure “a speedy resolution of the current suspension of Twitter activities in Nigeria.”
Nnamani said while the association and its member companies understand the stance of the government, “it is pertinent that the issue is resolved soon in the interest of all.”
He stressed that the OTT (Over The Top) platforms, such as Twitter, is an essential part of the digital economy that the federal government is promoting.
The national body of telecommunications providers in Nigeria through its President said when an unfortunate disagreement in terms of user policies arises, “it is good that it is resolved in a timely manner.”
On Friday, Gatekeepers News reported that the Minister of Information, Lai Muhammad, announced the indefinite suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria.
The federal government also ordered National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
Nigerians have thereafter resorted to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to bypass the domain restrictions to access the microblogging platform.
The suspension can be traced to Twitter’s deletion of President Muhammadu Buhari’s controversial tweet about the civil war.
