United State Vice President, Kamala Harris has warned illegal migrants not to get close to the U.S border.

Gatekeepers News reports that Kamala Harris on Monday during a joint news conference with Guatemalan President, Alejandro Giammattei, said it is the priority of President Joe Biden’s administration to discourage the people of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras (the three countries where the majority of migrants hail from) from making an illegal journey to the U.S border.

The Vice President kicked off a three-day diplomatic trip to the Northern Triangle, her first official trip abroad since she assumed office.

“Most people do not want to leave the place where they grew up, loved ones and people with whom they share a language and culture,” she said, noting that they often did so “either because they are fleeing some harm or because they simply cannot satisfy their basic needs by staying at home.”

Whatever their reasons might be, Harris warned illegal migrants not to think of the U.S.

“Do not come,” she stressed. “The United States will continue to enforce our laws and secure our borders.

“If you come to our border, you will be turned back.”

The Vice President further proposed that the U.S and Guatemala join hands to find solutions to the long-standing problems.

People must be given “a sense of hope that help is on the way,” she said.

“It must be coupled with relationships of trust. It must be coupled with tangible outcomes, in terms of what we do as leaders to convince people that there is a reason to be hopeful about their future and the future of their children.”

She also informed Giammattei that the U.S would send 500,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines to Guatemala.

In his response, Giammattei said Guatemala is ready to co-operate “to create conditions in Guatemala so that (young people) can find here the hope they do not have today”.

Gatekeepers News reports that the U.S Vice president announced a joint task force on smuggling and human trafficking, a women’s empowerment programme, and an anti-corruption task force to help Central American law enforcement.

Harris is scheduled to meet Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador today (Tuesday) as part of the Biden administration’s promise to enact a more humane immigration policy.
