Lawmakers in the upper legislative chamber on Thursday have disagreed over the proposed electronic transmission of election results as contained in the electoral act amendment bill.
Gatekeepers News reports that section 52(3) was amended by removing the powers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the use of electronic transmission of results.
The commotion started when the Senate Deputy Whip, Sabi Abdullahi, moved to amend the section provided that INEC may consider electronic transmission so far the national network coverage is adjudged to be adequate and secure by Nigeria Communication Commission and approved by the National Assembly.
Senate President, Ahmed Lawan couldn’t bring the chamber back to order. This
prompted the Senate to go into a closed-door session.
Gatekeepers News reports that after the closed-door session, Senate minority leader Senator Enyinaya Abaribe called for a division challenging the Senate President’s ruling on clause 52(3) on electronic transmission.
This is a developing story…
