Senate Okays Conditional Electronic Transmission Of Electoral Results

Nigerian Senate has approved the conditional electronic transmission of electoral results.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Nigerian Senate, on Thursday approved the conditional electronic transmission of electoral results.

The approval comes after Senators voted publicly along party lines over section 52(3) of the electoral act amendment bill, which deals with the electronic transmission of poll results.

At the end of the voting, 28 legislators mostly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) voted for the original amendment in the report while 52 mostly from the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) voted for the amendment as proposed by Senator Sabi Abdullahi.

The result of the votes means that INEC may consider electronic transmission provided the national network coverage is adjudged to be adequate, secured by Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and approved by the National Assembly.

Before the voting, Gatekeepers News earlier reported that the Lawmakers in the upper chamber plunged into a rowdy session as they disagreed over the amendment of section 52(3) of the electoral act amendment bill.

The new amendment was sought by Senator Sabi Abdullahi from Niger state and seconded by Senator Ali Ndume.

The controversial amendment which immediately divided the lawmakers plunged the session into a rowdy one.

The Senate President who was unable to bring the chamber back to order called for a closed-door session.

However, the Senate minority leader, Senator Enyinaya Abaribe after the closed-door session called for a division challenging the Senate President’s ruling on clause 52(3) on electronic transmission.

Abaribe said he wants Nigerians to know who is voting for what.
