Gatekeepers News reports that Lionel Messi’s Copa America photo has broken Instagram’s most-liked sports photo record which currently has 20.8 million likes.
Messi has, therefore, surpassed his closest rival’s record, Cristiano Ronaldo – 19.8 million likes of his tribute to Diego Maradona after passing on November 25, 2020.
Coincidentally, Messi’s tribute to the legend also featured in the top 20 most popular posts from an athlete, having been liked 16.4 million times, placing it 16th in the list.
The Barcelona star posted himself with the Copa America trophy in the record-breaking photo.
The photo of Messi has become the sixth most-liked post in the history of the social network, behind posts from the likes of Billie Eilish, XXXTentacion, Ariana Grande, and the world record-breaking photograph of an egg from January 4, 2019.
The tournament success was well-earned after Messi comfortably became the player of the tournament. He was a constant thorn in the side of just about every team he faced.
