Edison Cavani has given up Manchester United’s No. 7 shirt to returnee Cristiano Ronaldo.
Gatekeepers News reports that Manchester United has confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the club’s iconic number seven shirt again after Edinson Cavani agreed to surrender the shirt.
The Portuguese forward followed a long list of United legends like George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, and David Beckham who have worn the number seven shirt. He had won it during his first spell at Old Trafford from 2003 to 2009.
Last week, United broke the social media space after announcing the return of the 36-year-old from Juventus. As at the time of the announcement, Cavani had the number seven.
The Uruguayan has, however, agreed to swap to 21 which is the number he wears for his national team for Ronaldo to reclaim his old jersey.
The report says the club would need special dispensation from the Premier League to process the switch following the start of the domestic campaign.
The club wrote on their website, “Manchester United can confirm that Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the iconic no.7 shirt after returning to Old Trafford.
“As our new signing is allocated no.7, El Matador will switch to no.21, the same number our prolific striker wears for the Uruguayan national team.
“United’s first fixture after the international break, in which Ronaldo could make his second debut, is at home to Newcastle United on Saturday 11 September.
“We’re all excited to see our returning no.7 in action at the Theatre of Dreams again.”
