FACT CHECK: See What NYSC Said About Some Corps Members And Drugs

By Uthman Olamilekan Bagbansoro

Recently, a report emerged saying NYSC Corp Members are drug addicts.

Gatekeepers News has since found out that the report was false.

Checks by Gatekeepers News has shown the Ondo State Coordinator of the NYSC, Southwest Nigeria; Victoria Ani was quoted out of context in her response to a question.

The event, which was a stakeholder parley, allowed some employers of labour to speak on how helpful the scheme has been to them, plus challenges they encountered.

A stakeholder had told the NYSC of a particular case of a Corp member who was into drugs. Mrs Ani, while reacting to the complaints, said, “For the Corps members that take weeds(Indian hemp), I need to let you know that NYSC is doing so much. The orientation camp has helped a few withdraw from substances abuse. The camp life is an opportunity for anyone doing drugs to drop such habits”. Ani then asked that stakeholders do everything they can to help anyone so found in such a situation.

“As stakeholders and partners in progress with NYSC, we should ensure we help anyone found in such a situation. We are happy for the immense amount of cooperation we get from other sister agencies like NDLEA and counsellors who speak on a wide range of issues in camp”.

“In the scheme, we counsel them, talk to them every morning. So when you have such in your employment, please take them as your children by rendering help and counselling”.
