Premier League clubs have recorded 90 new COVID-19 cases.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Premier League says 90 new COVID-19 cases were recorded in its latest round of testing, with a record 12,345 tests carried out by top-flight players and staff as Omicron continues to wreak havoc with the football calendar.
Following the re-introduction of a raft of restrictions to help slow down the spread of the virus, those wanting to enter a club’s training ground are mandated to take a mandatory lateral flow test daily – with PCR tests carried out twice a week.
Despite these, on Monday clubs rejected the idea of cancelling a round of fixtures over the festive period at a meeting and instead plan to struggle on despite a number of games being called off. However, this decision will be reviewed in two weeks.
A statement from the Premier League read, “The league is continuing to work with clubs to keep people safe by helping mitigate the risks of Covid-19 within their squads.
“We are also liaising closely with the Government, local authorities, and supporter groups while being responsive to any future changes to national or local guidance.”
Following this, the Premier League confirmed that 92 per cent of players and staff have now received either their first, second, or third vaccination dose, with 77 per cent of stars double-jabbed. This is a 24 per cent rise from the figure released back in October.
The top-flight also confirmed in an official statement that 84 per cent of players are ‘on the vaccination journey’, referring to them having at least one dose. However, 16 per cent of players are still yet to receive their first dosage.
