The Nigerian senate has rejected a request by President Muhammadu Buhari seeking to delete a clause in the newly-signed electoral act.
Gatekeepers News reports that the chamber rejected the bill through a voice vote when it was tabled to be read a second time.
Senator representing Kogi West, Senator Smart Adeyemi while leading the debate said, ““One of the hallmark of democracy is justice, fairness and equity. In any election, where people have the advantage of holding Executive power either by proxy or appointment and for such people to have access to compete with others from the street is an unjust society.
“Therefore I disagree to reconsider a decision that has already been settled.”
When Buhari signed the electoral act amendment bill into law, he said clause 84 (12) disenfranchises political appointees.
He later sent a formal request to the national assembly for it to delete the clause.
