Croatia and Argentina have qualified for the semi-finals of the Qatar 2022 World Cup through a penalty shootout.
Gatekeepers News reports that Argentina defeated Netherlands in a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw at stoppage time.
Argentine Nahuel Molina opened the scoring line with his first goal for his country before Lionel Messi added a second from the penalty spot with less than 20 minutes left in the match.
Afterward, substitute Wout Weghorst netted a brace for Netherlands to keep the contest stronger. This was, however, not sufficient for the next round as Louis van Gaal’s men were sent packing in a penalty shootout that ended 4-3 in favour of the Argentines.
Earlier on Friday, Croatia created an upset after defeating Brazil 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw at stoppage time.
Neymar launched the scoreline in the first half of the extra minute to give Brazilians a lead. There was however a twist after Bruno Petkovic netted an equaliser leading to a penalty shootout.
At the penalty shootout, Marquinhos and Rodrygo of the five-time champions failed to convert, while Nikola Vlasic, Lovro Majer, Luka Modric, and Orsic of Croatia completed a perfect set of spot-kicks bringing the game to an end at 4-2.
The 2022 World Cup quarter-final continues today as Morocco face Portugal at 1600Hrs, and England meet France at 2000Hrs.
