Gatekeepers News reports that Thugs stormed the Ogun State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Isabo on Monday despite the heavy presence of security agents.
A clash broke out between supporters of two major political parties – APC and PDP as some of the thugs were seen holding canes and sticks
The PDP governorship aspirant was flogged with canes and physically assaulted, nearly falling into a ditch.
Eyewitnesses say Showunmi was introducing himself to the security agents manning the gate when he was ambushed by thugs who descended on him with sticks.
The party chieftain while trying to escape from his attackers was pursued with canes and stones.
Reports say that operatives of the police, the Amotekun Corps and others who were at the scene of the incident, appeared to be unconcerned while the politician was being assaulted.
He was later whisked away by some men, leaving his car behind.
Reacting to the development, Sowunmi called for the relocation of the tribunal sitting to Abuja owing to what he described as the observed security lapses.
