Kano House Of Assembly Annuls Law Which Balkanized Kano Emirate

Kano House of Assembly has annulled the law that created five emirates in the state.

Gatekeepers News reports that the House of Assembly passed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 during plenary on Thursday.

The assembly approved the amendment of the Kano State Emirate Council Law which led to the division of the emirate in 2019.

The legislation was conceived to reduce the influence of Muhammadu Sanusi, the then Emir of Kano.

Abdullahi Ganduje, the then governor of the state, signed the bill into law and Kano was divided into five emirates — Kano, Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Bichi — with Emirs appointed into each emirate.

Ganduje deposed Sanusi as Emir of Kano in March 2020 for not following g the lawful instructions from the office of the governor.

Lawan Hussaini Dala, the majority leader, moved a motion for the amendment of the law last Tuesday during plenary. He said the law wasn’t created in good faith.

The assembly subsequently resolved to amend the law, abolished the five emirates, and restored the original Kano emirate system.
