Nigeria Police Force continued to occupy the headquarters of the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Rivers State, following violent clashes on Tuesday between supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
Gatekeepers News reports that the crisis began when youths attempted to remove the elected chairpersons, whose tenure ended on Monday, from the LGA secretariats.
Despite Governor Fubara’s order for the heads of Local Government administration to take control, some former chairpersons tried to resume duty but were chased away.
The clashes resulted in two deaths, including a police officer.
On Wednesday, Fubara inaugurated caretaker committee chairpersons for the 23 LGAs, but some were denied access to the council offices due to the ongoing police blockade.
Darlington Orji, caretaker chairman of Ikwere LGA, stated that police officers, acting on the Inspector-General’s orders, prevented him from accessing the council secretariat.
The political crisis in Rivers State persists due to the rivalry between Fubara and Wike
