Cholera Spreads To Kirikiri Prison - 25 Inmates Affected
Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, has confirmed a cholera outbreak at Kirikiri Medium Security Prison, with 25 cases reported.

Gatekeepers News reports that Abayomi stated that urgent medical and environmental measures have been implemented successfully, and no new cholera-related deaths have been reported in the last 72 hours. He attributed the outbreak to unregulated street beverages and contaminated water supply.

The commissioner assured that the Government is taking decisive actions to combat and control cholera, and urged the public not to panic.

He also announced that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has donated 10,000 doses of pharmaceuticals to support prison health facilities.

A statement signed on Sunday by the Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo,  said the commissioner reported “a small outbreak of 25 cases of severe gastroenteritis confirmed to be caused by cholera.”

It added: “We supplied Kirikiri medium prison with intravenous fluids, infection prevention, and other health consumables.

“Additionally, the World Health Organisation donated 10,000 doses of pharmaceuticals already delivered to the prison to support prison health facilities with prevention strategies for about 3,200 inmates if required.
